7/27/2024 - CFM/Airflow, Amperage testing results added - SPAL fan upgrade outputs 48% more air flow PER fan.

6/22/2024 - Product improvements - Introducing 11" SPAL Fans - Waterproof & bolts right up to fan shroud without modifications while their 12" version will not.

tldr - 7+ Years Strong. A must have for MR2. Our proven solution. Dual engine fan shroud lid alone reduces Intake Air Temperatures by an incredible 20-30+F (with only default fans, not considering our more powerful SPAL variant). - Heat soak/power loss can suck, but our solutions can greatly reduce/eliminate that and you can wave those problems goodbye once and for all.

The Problem

Intake Air Temperatures (IAT) with OEM or aftermarket stainless steel/Aluminum pipes on an upgraded side mounted intercooler core setup can exceed a blistering 140-145F+ after 3 to 6 pulls when ran without proper auxiliary cooling and temperature alleviating modifications. Enough for your ECU to pull 30-70+ WHP worth of timing/power and fun away

Why 91-98 MR2s suffers from heat soak

Firstly, our exhaust manifold temperatures can reach 1100°F and 1800°F or higher, while valve cover temperatures typically range from 185°F to 300°F. Unfortunately, due to a poor design by the OEM, a significant portion of our intake air pathway is positioned directly above these heat sources, suffering greatly form radiation heating. This design flaw places substantial stress on our side-mounted heat exchanger and renders our pipes/intake manifold too hot to touch.

Secondly, through our testing, where we attached every available fan to the heat exchanger core, we discovered that only one intercooler fan could effectively push air through the 4-inch thick core. With the other fans, it was difficult to generate enough airflow to even move a taped piece of paper off the core

Third, the natural airflow generated by the vehicle being in motion must make two consecutive sharp 90-degree turns before it even reaches the dense 4-inch intercooler core. By that point, the reduced air velocity is likely inadequate to fully penetrate the core fully

For those who argue "its a short path and heat soak doesn't matter because air isn't in the pipes for long", go check out the large temperature differences and watch the detailed video. Keep in mind, those results are for pipes not placed directly above MR2 motor/exhaust manifold but the physics are the same and the results/temperature differences on a MR2 are far greater. By the way, we haven't even discussed the temperature benefits of utilizing carbon fiber, but more on that on another product page - https://youtu.be/rHXB4ljWHf4?t=1917

How this Dual 12" Engine Lid Fan Shroud works - Eliminates Radiation Heating, rendering entire top end of the engine bay, including intake manifold and pipes cold/cool to the touch

The 2x 12" fans being positioned literally an inch away forces massive amounts of cool ambient air to help cool everything nearby, rendering everything up top cool to the touch. The large amounts of constant cool air flow disrupts any radiation heating of the pipes from said heat sources as cool air bounces right off your valve cover. That is a huge temperature difference, from burning hot to touch to cold/cool to the touch, even when motor is running.

Why blow into engine bay & not out of - Doesn't hot air travel upwards?

We don't argue that hot air rises and it does but what actually happens is hot air from your motor and block rises and heats up your components via radiation heating. Don't believe us? That air flow is free - try it yourself - If your components aren't cool to the touch after, there is your answer. Why blow in and not out? That is up to you, but we found much higher temperature reductions by blowing in.

The results

With that being said, many customers are seeing a 30-50+ degree reduction in their intake air temperatures with all our fan shrouds when paired with our aftermarket side mounted intercooler setups featuring carbon fiber pipes. Some of our customers are even running as high as 500+WHP on our side mounted intercooler kits with 808 CFM fan before reaching high intake air temperatures. Multiple 460WHP dyno pulls resulted in 100-105F IATS which is legendary on a side mounted intercooler. The end result with this fan shroud lid installed is MORE HP and FUN throughout your whole drive. Guaranteed.

Our other solutions to further lower intake temperatures - Air flow to side mounted intercooler is critical.

Features:

  • Dual fan shroud lower Air Temperatures by 20-30+F alone and increases horsepower
  • Great for top mount as well as side mounted intercoolers
  • Available in Full Carbon Fiber, Mirror Finish or in brushed raw aluminum form
  • Lightweight (CF version around 1/3 the weight of aluminum panels and 1/6 weight of steel)
  • Modern & exotic appearance
  • Premium, stylish & sleek
  • Great art canvas to start on if you're an artist - Draw on it, wrap it, paint over it, sign on it etc.
  • Cut with water, no burn or poop marks from laser cutting like others
  • Show off and compliment that precious engine bay/hard work in a classy way
  • Premium CNC cut full sized panel - Not half sized panel or hand cut like others
  • Tested and verified - A whopping peak 3300-3400 CFM of air flow. Thats about 6x the airflow of the common 9" intercooler fan we sell when strapped onto an IC core (That fan isn't a slouch either), or 4.25x our thick fat heavy duty extreme 9" HD SPAL fan

Carbon Fiber version will look great with some of many of our other Carbon Fiber offerings (CF intakes, CF Intercooler pipes, CF pre preg interior trims, CF T-Top shades, CF Wings, CF stage 2 wing, and even more in the future. Stay tuned for the releases!

Notes

  • Does not work on NA/Non turbo engine lid
  • Sold as a single panel or as a full kit with fans and hardware. Wiring is sold optionally as these fans can be wired up easily in many different ways.
  • Pair the dual fan shroud with our 9" extreme 800+ CFM spal intercooler core fan (see here) for the ultimate experience. If you are using a cheap 9" or even worse a 200-300 CFM 7", please strongly consider as air flow to the side mount heat exchanger is inadequate

  • Don't forget block off plates and intercooler core fan shroud to properly route & maximize air flow.
  • Please buy 2 dedicated wiring kits if you are upgrading to SPAL IC fan + dual fan shroud setup. OEM circuity will trip, inadequate and has huge voltage drops, reducing fan speed.

  • Raw Aluminum material in itself is a very prone to permanent finger printing/marring and easy to scratch material. It is also subjectable to water marks that may be difficult to remove once etched on.
    • Pro-Tip - Paint or wrap over aluminum surface with your desired color, picture or patterns. A simple $5 spray can will already do wonders, see pics.
