Description

Incredibly accurate and professional reproductions of the “TWIN CAM 16 turbo” logos found on some JDM MR2 rear quarter vent trims. Many hours were spent creating sharp and accurate text from the original trims. Various types of vinyl and colors were tested to capture the non-glossy appearance of the originals.

These decals were never offered for purchase separately from the trim pieces because they weren’t stickers to begin with. Toyota used what appears to be a two-step screen printing process where they printed a border/background that was slightly darker than the underlying trim color and then came back and printed the text on top of that. I suspect that this method was chosen because it produces a very durable and clean look as if the logo was painted on. Dirt and wax also doesn’t potentially collect around the edges. However, offering screen printing as a service is inconvenient and more costly than offering a decal, so that is the compromise I’ve had to make.

What’s wrong with the eBay and other reproductions?

The decals floating around on eBay and other places are a decent attempt at reproducing the look and feel of this “logo”, however upon closer inspection they fall short of a true reproduction:

  • Most noticeably the 6 is off, the OEM one has a more rounded appearance to it
  • The sizing and placement of certain letters is off
  • The slightly darker trim matched stroke is missing
  • The text is not slanted (italic) towards the rear of the car. This also means the same decal can be used on both sides which is not accurate of the OEM ones. Unconfirmed, but based on my research I think they didn’t have a slant to them until some time later.
  • They don’t come with any type of alignment guide

The eBay result is a decal that is just cut out of glossy vinyl. The screen-printing process doesn’t produce a glossy effect so in summary the reproductions are just all wrong.
